The World Health Organization, Africa Regional
Office (WHO/AFRO) held its Regional Meeting on the
Institutionalization of Traditional Medicine in
Health Systems in Ouidah, Benin, September 13-15,
2004. PROMETRA International along with
representatives from 27 nations participated in this
meeting formulation recommendations for WHO member
states.

September 2004 – The World Health Organization Africa Regional Office (WHO/AFRO) held its Regional Meeting on the Institutionalization of Traditional Medicine in Health Systems in Ouidah, Benin September 13-15, 2004. Meeting participants included national authorities responsible for traditional medicine and health policy/planning in the Ministries of Health, representatives from Professional Councils of Medical, Nursing, Pharmacy, lawyers and traditional health practitioners, representatives from research and training institutions and NGOs. PROMETRA International was an invited meeting participant.
The meeting was held at the Regional Institute for Public Heath of the Regional Center for Health Development in Ouidah, Benin. (45 kilometers outside of the capital city, Cotonou). This Institute was named after Dr. Alfred Comlan Quenum, the first WHO Regional Director for Africa. It has trained over 700 pubic health specialists from over 25 African nations and will begin a PhD program in Public Health in 2006.
The purpose of the regional meeting was to introduce the WHO/AFRO prepared tools for institutionalizing traditional medicine in health systems to the country participants. Participants identified the challenges and opportunities that countries are facing in their efforts to scale up this work and made recommendations for future activities.
