African International Traditional Medicine Day August 31st

 

 

Traditional healers, public health professionals, religious leaders policy makers and advocates march through downtown Dakar, Senegal in support of African traditional medicine.

 

September 2004 -- The World Health Organization, Africa Regional Bureau (WHO/AFRO) has officially declared August 31st as the annual day to recognize and honor African traditional medicine.  (AFRO's Press Release)  PROMETRA chapters throughout Africa host annual events to celebrate this important day.  On September 4th, PROMETRA Senegal conducted a traditional healers march through the streets of Dakar to highlight the need to legalize traditional medicine through laws and statutes throughout the continent of Africa, and to eliminate  charlatanism  and harmful traditional medicine practices.   The Republic of Senegal hosted an official traditional medicine celebration at the Center for Experimental Traditional Medicine in Fatick, Senegal on September 11, 2004. www.AFRO.WHO.int
