One cannot be a good physician without being a good priest Hippocrates The ideal role of the priest-physician is an ancient one in Africa, in fact, in traditional cultures around the world. These intertwined roles were embodied in the life of a well-known African high priest whom both Hippocrates and his ancestors venerated Imhotep, the architect, poet, priest and physician of Egypt’s Third Dynasty.
Today African traditional medicine still maintains a strong link between healing and spirituality, a link that we feel is equally relevant to the world at large. Technology has progressed rapidly, and Psychological Man and Spiritual Man have not kept pace. The psychospiritual values that once constituted our reason for living have collapsed and left us teetering on the abyss. For that reason, PROMETRA’s programs to preserve and restore traditional medicine involve traditional religion as well.
